his first steps

Way back in December Levi took his first step.
I was sure he was going to be walking by his birthday.
But he has taken his sweet time to get past two or three steps.
And he still prefers to crawl because it is much faster.
Just in the last few weeks, he has finally gotten brave
and now is taking quite a few steps at a time.
But every time I pull out the camera and try to capture him walking,
he gives me this look…please put the camera away Mama.
(Which reminds me so much of a similar look his sister once gave me.)
Or as soon as I say…Levi can you walk to Mama,
he plops down and starts laughing.
He thinks he is so funny.
But today he decided that he was ready to show me his new skills.
Here he is…
officially…
WALKING!
It is a good thing Levi has decided to walk.
He is about to wear a huge hole in the right knee of his jeans
from the crazy way he crawls.
I know…I’m sure it is only the first of many holes to come!
Levi is so slow and careful with each step he takes.
It is funny to watch him concentrate so hard.
Much different than everything else he does!
As I was thinking about how fast Levi is growing
and this new stage of having a walker now,
I was reminded of one of the verses that we chose for Levi:
True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.
Malachi 2:6

That continues to be my prayer for Levi’s life.
That he would grow to be a man who walks with Jesus.

  • Liza T - Hi Jess,
I am a long, long time reader (I tuned in right about the time Cora started to get persistently sick) but first time poster. I remember the day I read the words “Cora is with Jesus today” and like many others I’m sure…I sobbed until I was tearless. Not for Cora…who was finally, blessedly free of pain and cancer…but for you and Joel; I simply couldn’t find any words to convey my sadness for you. Everything seemed “not enough”. So, also like many others I imagine, I was with you in spirit, holding you up in prayer– so very grateful that it seemed you had a loving family support system to hold you up in person.

When you announced Levi’s impending arrival…I wept again–this time too I could not find the words but it was because there was no word to describe the joy I felt for you and Joel!

What moved me to write today was seeing the comparison of two photos….the one of Levi sitting on the floor, laughing hysterically…and the one of Cora on the sidebar- sitting in the grass, laughing hysterically 🙂 Both looking up, both dressed in green tops and jeans…it just struck me how it must be such a hard balance for you not to constantly find yourself SO reminded of Cora…but also to let yourself be swept up in their similarities sometimes; they ARE brother and sister after all.

It just struck me as the right time to let you know so many are still praying for you, still lifting you up, still remembering and praising God for the precious life and lifelong lessons of Cora Paige.

I’m so thankful for your openness, especially in the wake of such hardship…it has been a blessing to me in my life as I rightly minimize my struggles and remember that you choose joy every day after the most wrenching loss possible.

Sorry to make up for all of my absentee comments with one giant one! Like Levi and his steps…now that I have finally done it, I will definitely comment more often.

Love, peace, grace, and thanks… 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Julie B. - You dress Levi SO much like I used to dress my son, Hunter:) So little and yet so little “man” looking!
Just recently, Hunter (who is now a sweet 8 year old!), told me that he “needed a pair of ripped up Abercrombie jeans”. Come again?! I nearly fell over -then, I really DID fall over when I searched abercrombie kids online and saw that kid’s jeans were *only* $70 a pair!! So, yeah. Get ready. ‘Cus even boys that we dress adorable as toddler, will turn into Abercrombie-type young men. Eeeeeek!!ReplyCancel

  • The Veers - he is so stinkin cute!!!!ReplyCancel

  • Megan - Levi has the best clothes. When I had my boy I was scared. My girl was much easier to shop for. Boys are boring. Levi is NOT boring. Where do you get his jeans?ReplyCancel

  • Miss G - so adorable! Isn’t it just the best when our boys laugh at us. I just love it. KellyReplyCancel

  • Kelly - Levi is so adorable, I love these pictures of him! So exciting he is walking!
I was wondering, Jess, does he still use the blue denim-colored blanket I knitted for him? I just started making a rose pink one right now for our church’s children’s church pastor as she is due in June with her first little girl…and I was thinking of the blue one I sent for sweet little Levi when he was born…. I really love making baby blankets and hats and booties and give them away to new babies, I hope it blesses them as much as it does me to make them!ReplyCancel

  • NicXOXO - You should sign up at Sears for their Kidvantage program. Any kids clothing or shoe item that you buy can be exchanged for free if they wear it out before they outgrow it. You don’t even need a receipt as long as it’s not something like Levi jeans. It’s a great program!ReplyCancel
