snapshop with ashley ann {a giveaway}

Photography is such a powerful too. I love having the ability to capture the events that make up my everyday. They are cherished memories. Naturally, I started taking lots of pictures after Cora was born. Back then I remember being so concerned about everything looking perfect in my pictures. And I often didn’t want to be in the pictures if I didn’t look perfect too. Silly, I know. It wasn’t until after Cora died that I realized how many of our everyday moments I had neglected to capture. Those were my favorite memories…the everyday mundane moments and routines. I am so thankful for the pictures we do have, but I so wish I could go back and capture those moments.Β
When Levi was born I was determined to capture the everyday things we did. I didn’t want to worry so much about how we looked, or how clean the house was, or posing the perfect picture. I take lots of pictures now, but I still have so much to learn about my camera. I knew I needed to learn to shoot in manual, but didn’t really know where to start. I finally decided to just go for it and have been shooting in manual since February. I have learned a lot from friends and by reading photography blogs, but there were still so many things I didn’t understand.

Enter Ashley Ann’s online SnapShop course. I have been dying to take one of Ashley’s SnapShop classes ever since I met her at Megan’sΒ craft weekend. But I was never fast enough to register and could never get in!! I was SO excited to get the opportunity to take her August online SnapShop course. It was FANTASTIC! Ashley does such an incredible job of explaining photography in easy to understand language for a beginning photographer (like me!). And she includes tons of pictures and examples. I learned so much about my camera and feel much more comfortable shooting in manual now. Of course I still need lots and lots of practice! I think my favorite part of the course was Ashley’s tips on how to tell a story with your photos and how to capture moments not poses. Loved it! I wish I had known all of that when Cora was here.
Registration is now open for the September online SnapShop course. SnapShop is an introduction to photography course. It is a self paced course and you will have access to the material for three weeks. All you need is a DSLR camera. You can even take this course in your pajamas!! You can find out more information about SnapShops here.
Here is the best part…Ashley is offering a spot in her September online course to one of you. Thanks so much Ashley! Here is how you can enter to win:

As I thought about capturing the precious moments with my kids I just had to share this with you…
There is a family in our little town who had to say goodbye to their 19 month old daughter, Tatum, this past Saturday. Sweet Tatum was just five days younger than Levi and she spent 10 days at the same hospital Cora was at. She fought hard for her little life after a drowning accident. My heart has been breaking for this family even though we have never met. Tatum’s celebration of life service is today. I know so many of you prayed for our family and sweet Cora and I would love it if you would pray for this family today…that they would sense God’s indescribable love and comfort as they celebrate their daughter’s precious life this afternoon. Thank you!

  • Abbie - I just started really enjoying photography after buying my first DSLR so I would LOVE this opportunity!

As for the question- I just love the every day things that happen… my husband playing with the dogs, the sky as the sun sets, family get togethers, golf outings, etc. When we have kids I can’t wait to photograph them too!ReplyCancel

  • Paige - My 4 mo old needs a mom who knows how to run a camera. If I get chosen, I will break down and spring for the DSLR.
I want to be able to catch instant moments of her milestones and tell stories with my camera (ex: rolling over with snapshots, not the video camera). Also, we need candids of our everday, such as our walk this morning. It was so nice out here in Clay Center.ReplyCancel

  • {cuppakim} - I’d LOVE to win πŸ™‚ Thanks for hosting a fun little giveaway!

I just love capturing the everyday moments themselves.

A cup of tea on the table.

A flower along the side of the road.

Seeing the pretty without letting it pass me by πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

  • Dana - I love reading your blog and looking at all your great pictures! I just got my first DSLR for Christmas last year and I have yet to learn how to use it! It still takes great pictures so I have enjoyed taking shots of my 3 kids. Because we are an adoptive family there are parts of their early life that we were not able to share with them so I make up for it now by filling picture albums full! πŸ™‚

I am so very sorry to hear about the family that lost their little girl. I will pray for them today..ReplyCancel

  • Nicole - I’ve had my DSLR for awhile now and am thinking of upgrading. This class sounds amazing, I have been wanting to take classes for awhile now and can never seem to come up with the extra money.

The everyday moments I enjoy capturing are when my kids are being the most quiet, it’s usually when they are sharing a sweet time together between the fighting. I love to sneak out and get shots of my son “reading” to my daughter or them just randomly embracing through out the day.

Tatum’s family are in my thoughts.ReplyCancel

  • Caroline - Yeah! Love Ashley’s blog too and would love to win this!ReplyCancel

My children are mostly grown (one still at home) and it makes me sad that I don’t have pictures for them and for myself to remember the everyday things. The special moments are important too, but it is the ordinary days that I wish I could get back.ReplyCancel

  • Mrs. H - I think this course would spring me back into motion with photography. I too endeavored to self-learn as much as I could via the internet, but have never taken an actual course. Lately I haven’t even picked up my camera to capture “posed moments” let along “everyday ones.” I need to get back into action as these days/stages for my family pass all too quickly.ReplyCancel

  • Susy M. - Praying for Tatum and her family. May she and Cora be the best of friends up in Heaven.ReplyCancel

  • thehobbs - I’ve had a DSLR since Christmastime and have yet to get up the nerve to switch to manual. All the letters and numbers scare me and I’m terrified I’ll push a button and screw the whole thing up. I would love, love, love to be chosen for this class so I can better capture my everyday with my 16 month old.
I liked the analogy of telling a story with your camera. I, too, get all caught up in posing or not being in a picture because I don’t have makeup on. I want to have good, quality pictures to remember this time in life when I’m old and wrinkly and the pictures are all I have left.ReplyCancel

I just grab my camera and shoot and hope the setting is right, even if the picture is sometimes blurry, you still feel the emotion. Thanks for the opportunity!ReplyCancel

  • mary - I’ve had a family blog since my first child was born almost 8 years ago. I started out with a very basic point-and-shoot camera. I look back at those early photos — they are TERRIBLE photographically. But I am so thankful to have the daily image of life with my first baby. Now I have a DSLR, and I spend a lot of time feeling discouraged about how terrible my photos are. However, when I look back on those “everyday moments,” I’m glad to have them. It’s a hard balance to strike — wanting the pictures to be beautiful, because the memories are. Now that my kids are getting older (7, 6, and 4), I am appreciating just how quickly the time passes by and wanting to be sure to capture fleeting moments before they all have adult teeth!! πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

However, most of them were the pose for the camera type pictures – and the ones I so love are of seeing him just being himself. πŸ™‚ (One of the favorites of him is him messing around with a rose in his mouth! I was probably 10 when it was taken -but its always been a favorite).

I have a DSLR but always shoot it on AUTO. Help!!ReplyCancel

The look on his face of admiration and his attempts to do EVERYTHING she does is priceless. I also want to be able to capture action moments without being blurry. There are plenty of those around my house!ReplyCancel

  • G. - I would love to capture the ‘scenes’ that my 5-yr-old son and 3-yr-old daughter leave all over the house. From tiny plastic toy soldiers hanging in a plant, to a play teacup set next to a teddy bear, I love the creations that reveal their ever-changing imaginations.

  • Anonymous - With our oldest turning 13 this month – I find it more and more difficult to not feel stuck with what a meaningful picture is. The footie pjs, the falling asleep pics, the cuddling with their animals, learning to walk, riding a bike, all of those moments that we fill our cameras with when they are young (and I still have those with the younger boys!) Now, I am learning to find new moments. They are not full of chubby legs, diapered bottoms or thumbs being suck . . . but endearing nonetheless. I hope I can capture it. πŸ™‚ ~ Carrie MetzReplyCancel
