snapshop with ashley ann {a giveaway}

Photography is such a powerful too. I love having the ability to capture the events that make up my everyday. They are cherished memories. Naturally, I started taking lots of pictures after Cora was born. Back then I remember being so concerned about everything looking perfect in my pictures. And I often didn’t want to be in the pictures if I didn’t look perfect too. Silly, I know. It wasn’t until after Cora died that I realized how many of our everyday moments I had neglected to capture. Those were my favorite memories…the everyday mundane moments and routines. I am so thankful for the pictures we do have, but I so wish I could go back and capture those moments.
When Levi was born I was determined to capture the everyday things we did. I didn’t want to worry so much about how we looked, or how clean the house was, or posing the perfect picture. I take lots of pictures now, but I still have so much to learn about my camera. I knew I needed to learn to shoot in manual, but didn’t really know where to start. I finally decided to just go for it and have been shooting in manual since February. I have learned a lot from friends and by reading photography blogs, but there were still so many things I didn’t understand.
Enter Ashley Ann’s online SnapShop course. I have been dying to take one of Ashley’s SnapShop classes ever since I met her at Megan’s craft weekend. But I was never fast enough to register and could never get in!! I was SO excited to get the opportunity to take her August online SnapShop course. It was FANTASTIC! Ashley does such an incredible job of explaining photography in easy to understand language for a beginning photographer (like me!). And she includes tons of pictures and examples. I learned so much about my camera and feel much more comfortable shooting in manual now. Of course I still need lots and lots of practice! I think my favorite part of the course was Ashley’s tips on how to tell a story with your photos and how to capture moments not poses. Loved it! I wish I had known all of that when Cora was here.
Registration is now open for the September online SnapShop course. SnapShop is an introduction to photography course. It is a self paced course and you will have access to the material for three weeks. All you need is a DSLR camera. You can even take this course in your pajamas!! You can find out more information about SnapShops here.
Here is the best part…Ashley is offering a spot in her September online course to one of you. Thanks so much Ashley! Here is how you can enter to win:

As I thought about capturing the precious moments with my kids I just had to share this with you…
There is a family in our little town who had to say goodbye to their 19 month old daughter, Tatum, this past Saturday. Sweet Tatum was just five days younger than Levi and she spent 10 days at the same hospital Cora was at. She fought hard for her little life after a drowning accident. My heart has been breaking for this family even though we have never met. Tatum’s celebration of life service is today. I know so many of you prayed for our family and sweet Cora and I would love it if you would pray for this family today…that they would sense God’s indescribable love and comfort as they celebrate their daughter’s precious life this afternoon. Thank you!
  • Abbie - I just started really enjoying photography after buying my first DSLR so I would LOVE this opportunity!

As for the question- I just love the every day things that happen… my husband playing with the dogs, the sky as the sun sets, family get togethers, golf outings, etc. When we have kids I can’t wait to photograph them too!ReplyCancel

  • Paige - My 4 mo old needs a mom who knows how to run a camera. If I get chosen, I will break down and spring for the DSLR.
I want to be able to catch instant moments of her milestones and tell stories with my camera (ex: rolling over with snapshots, not the video camera). Also, we need candids of our everday, such as our walk this morning. It was so nice out here in Clay Center.ReplyCancel

  • {cuppakim} - I’d LOVE to win 🙂 Thanks for hosting a fun little giveaway!

I just love capturing the everyday moments themselves.

A cup of tea on the table.

A flower along the side of the road.

Seeing the pretty without letting it pass me by 🙂ReplyCancel

  • SJ - I’d love to be better about capturing our everyday things, too, especially now that our daughter is getting bigger and more involved in what we do.

    This class sounds amazing.ReplyCancel

  • The Fishers - I would love to learn more about my DSLR camera ~ had it for two years and still have no clue how much it can do! I just love being able to capture my kids enjoying daily life (along with the occasional grumpy faces).

Praying for the family of Tatum.ReplyCancel

  • Dana - I love reading your blog and looking at all your great pictures! I just got my first DSLR for Christmas last year and I have yet to learn how to use it! It still takes great pictures so I have enjoyed taking shots of my 3 kids. Because we are an adoptive family there are parts of their early life that we were not able to share with them so I make up for it now by filling picture albums full! 🙂

I am so very sorry to hear about the family that lost their little girl. I will pray for them today..ReplyCancel

  • Allison Littleford - I would love to learn how to capture beautiful pictures/moments of my one year old daughter, especially of her daddy interacting with her! I love Ashley Ann’s blog and have been trying to convince my husband to let me do the work shop 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Nicole - I’ve had my DSLR for awhile now and am thinking of upgrading. This class sounds amazing, I have been wanting to take classes for awhile now and can never seem to come up with the extra money.

The everyday moments I enjoy capturing are when my kids are being the most quiet, it’s usually when they are sharing a sweet time together between the fighting. I love to sneak out and get shots of my son “reading” to my daughter or them just randomly embracing through out the day.

Tatum’s family are in my thoughts.ReplyCancel

  • Caroline - Yeah! Love Ashley’s blog too and would love to win this!ReplyCancel

  • Caroline - This comment has been removed by the author.ReplyCancel

  • Hannah J - Oh my gosh, I’ve been trying to teach myself to use our camera better and it’s slow going! We’ve got an 8-month old son and although my pictures now are getting slightly better, I still don’t have a ton that I love of him, you know? This would be so great.ReplyCancel

  • Teresa_Rae - I would love to take this class!

I’ve had a DSLR since May of 2009 and still shoot in auto 95% of the time. I have a 17 month old and I’d love to get better pictures of her. I take approximately between 500 and 1000 pictures of her a month and would like to get better at it.ReplyCancel

  • awagner - Would so LOVE a spot in Ashley’s class. I wanted to take it in August, but after some mounting medical bills for our little guy, it wasn’t the best use of monetary resources. Anyways, capturing the everyday moments between my daughter and son and their amazing sibling relationship (and their sibling arriving in January too!). Thanks for the giveaway!ReplyCancel

  • Amanda - I love reading her blog too! The class looks amazing but a little out of our budget 🙂 I have two precious girls that I love snapping pictures of everyday. I don’t want to miss anything and I’ve found the messy crazy pictures are my favorite.ReplyCancel

Thanks for the chance to win!ReplyCancel

  • Corey - Oh my goodness I would love this! I am currently teaching myself how to shoot and I would love an experts help!!! I am working hard at capturing life’s best moments. My children are mostly grown (one still at home) and it makes me sad that I don’t have pictures for them and for myself to remember the everyday things. The special moments are important too, but it is the ordinary days that I wish I could get back.ReplyCancel

  • Mrs. H - I think this course would spring me back into motion with photography. I too endeavored to self-learn as much as I could via the internet, but have never taken an actual course. Lately I haven’t even picked up my camera to capture “posed moments” let along “everyday ones.” I need to get back into action as these days/stages for my family pass all too quickly.ReplyCancel

  • Susy M. - Praying for Tatum and her family. May she and Cora be the best of friends up in Heaven.ReplyCancel

  • merlin - I have wanted to drop-kick my fancy dslr camera (a gift)across many a room….that thing with all of its dials and options FRUSTRATES me, so, my favorite part of this post is that you give me hope that someday I might learn to use and love my fancy camera 🙂

PS Jess, could you clarify, if we are allowed to post 2 responses with the second being the answer about the “moments captured”, or are we to answer both question with one post? Thx.ReplyCancel

  • thehobbs - I’ve had a DSLR since Christmastime and have yet to get up the nerve to switch to manual. All the letters and numbers scare me and I’m terrified I’ll push a button and screw the whole thing up. I would love, love, love to be chosen for this class so I can better capture my everyday with my 16 month old.
I liked the analogy of telling a story with your camera. I, too, get all caught up in posing or not being in a picture because I don’t have makeup on. I want to have good, quality pictures to remember this time in life when I’m old and wrinkly and the pictures are all I have left.ReplyCancel

I just grab my camera and shoot and hope the setting is right, even if the picture is sometimes blurry, you still feel the emotion. Thanks for the opportunity!ReplyCancel

  • Becky F. - I work very early in the morning. Each day when I drive to work I take a picture of the sunrise to send to my husband, my daughter, and my mother so that they can see the beauty that I see, and also so they know that I am thinking about them.

I have a DSLR, but I use my iPhone for these shots so that I can easily send the pics right away. That being said, sometimes the sunrise is so beautiful that I would love to capture these “good morning sunshine” shots with my DSLR.

The way he crawls on his knees on the carpet, and then switches to crawling on the bottom of his feet like bear once he hits the hardwood. The way he will look at you out of the corner of his eye if you sit him in his highchair with no food on the tray. The way he makes a mad dash for me when I say “I want to hold my baby!”. There is so many things about him that I haven’t documented yet. I started out exactly like you for the first 6 months, and I regret it so much. This would help me to know how to use the camera I’ve wanted for so long!ReplyCancel

I love getting a picture of my kids playing together and seeing a still image of their incredible bond. I am sure these pictures will be an absolute treasure to me when my kids are all grown.

  • Nemmie - So glad you started shooting Manual – you will see, it opens you up to so much more that you can do with what you shoot. So kudos to you! 🙂

I try to shoot every day, whether it’s trips to the farmer’s market or playing at home or photos for friends. I try to take a cue from Kelle Hampton, she’s the best mom-blogger that I read. Photography andn blogging are such wonderful tools to document your life, and I think more people should take advantage of that!

Keep up the good work with your own blog 🙂ReplyCancel

  • mary - I’ve had a family blog since my first child was born almost 8 years ago. I started out with a very basic point-and-shoot camera. I look back at those early photos — they are TERRIBLE photographically. But I am so thankful to have the daily image of life with my first baby. Now I have a DSLR, and I spend a lot of time feeling discouraged about how terrible my photos are. However, when I look back on those “everyday moments,” I’m glad to have them. It’s a hard balance to strike — wanting the pictures to be beautiful, because the memories are. Now that my kids are getting older (7, 6, and 4), I am appreciating just how quickly the time passes by and wanting to be sure to capture fleeting moments before they all have adult teeth!! 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Holly - I want to capture the everyday moments and memories of my family. My dad died several years ago and I treasure the photos we have together. However, most of them were the pose for the camera type pictures – and the ones I so love are of seeing him just being himself. 🙂 (One of the favorites of him is him messing around with a rose in his mouth! I was probably 10 when it was taken -but its always been a favorite).

I’d love to change that!!ReplyCancel

  • Anonymous - With our oldest turning 13 this month – I find it more and more difficult to not feel stuck with what a meaningful picture is. The footie pjs, the falling asleep pics, the cuddling with their animals, learning to walk, riding a bike, all of those moments that we fill our cameras with when they are young (and I still have those with the younger boys!) Now, I am learning to find new moments. They are not full of chubby legs, diapered bottoms or thumbs being suck . . . but endearing nonetheless. I hope I can capture it. 🙂 ~ Carrie MetzReplyCancel

I have an 8.5 month old son who is learning so many new things every day. I’d love to capture him as he’s pulling up, and taking steps with help. I’d love to capture the way his little mouth opens when he’s examining something in his hands.

  • Tammyz - My favorite moments to capture on film are…my kids laughing together while playing a game, with legos, sword fighting, taking rides on the zip line out back, being tickled by their Papa. Yes, laughter and big moments (a lost tooth, a beautiful drawing, unloading the dish washer by self for the first time, first steps…)ReplyCancel
